Building the pool retaining walls

The next step is to build the retaining walls that will enclose the pool on three sides. These walls are built upon the footings that were poured just before we broke for winter.

Water is the driver of nature

Once the inspector had completed inspecting our glorious temporary fence, it was time to finally get some water into the pool.

Temporary fence required

After a long break over the winter, it’s finally time to get started again. In this part of the world even a pool that is under construction must have a compliant fence in place if more than 300mm of water is to be placed (or could potentially accumulate) in the pool.

A concrete milestone

It’s crunch time. After much effort spent excavating, building a base, making a mold, and [filling it with steel]({{ relref “2017-06-01-so-much-steel-part-one” >}}), it’s time to fill it all up with concrete.

Pool Plumbing - Construction

With the 3D design to guide me, I set about building the pump/filtration system and connecting all of the suction and return pipes.

Plumbing the pool shell

Suction and return fittings As explained in the pool plumbing design post, we have a skimmer and two wall suction fittings to extract water from the pool and three return eyeballs to return water.

Pool plumbing - Design

A pool’s plumbing system is designed to keep the water clean and hygienic. It consists of one or more suction fittings in the pool that draw water and debris in, a bunch of equipment located somewhere near the pool that processes the water, and one or more returns, where the clean water flows back in to the pool.

So much steel (Part two)

We covered cutting and bending in the first-part of this two-part post. Now it’s time to place the bent, cut, steel with the help of chairs and ties.

So much steel (Part one)

534 meters of bar plus mesh to be precise. As discussed during the detailed design, the retaining walls and wall footings contain a lot of steel.

Making a mold

After completing work on the compacted base for the retaining wall footings, it’s time to make preparations to pour the concrete footings themselves.

Now that's a crane

70-tonne Liebherr mobile crane arriving It’s time for step two of moving the pool shell into place (step one being already complete).

Special delivery

With the pool base compacted, screeded and ready, it’s time to put the shell down. The pool site itself is in the back garden and there’s no access for a crane so we’ll be lifting it over the house from the street.
